NOTE ON HONG KONG SALARY SCALES

(1) ADMINISTRATIVE SCALE

The scale proposed by the Commission is as follows:-

BASIC SCALE (in Hong Kong dollars per mensem) 720-

720 - 760-800 x 40

V

1,000, x 60

-

1180 x 120

-

1780,

1840, 1900 (£540 per annum to £1,425).

SCALE FOR EXPATRIATE OFFICERS.

(£665 per annum rising after 19 years to

£1,675 per annum).

It is considered that the scale

should be modified to avoid the series of £90

increments which appear in this scale between

v1180 and $1780, as increments of this amount are

without precedent in the Colonial Service. With

this object it is proposed that the scale

recommended by the Commission should be modified

and that after $1,000 per mensem it should proceed

as follows:-

$1120, 1180, 1240,

1300, $1360, 1420, $1500

$1580, 1660, 1740, 1820, 1900.

Following the

practice in East and West Africa and in the

existing Hong Kong scale the modified scale contains

a big jump after the ninth point when an officer's

family responsibilities and expenses normally

begin to increase considerably. The scale also

provides regular increments of £45 up to $1420 per mensem (£1265 per annum) and regular increments

of £60 thereafter.

The proposal to fix the charges for

the rental of Government quarters at one seventh

of the basic salary has necessitated fixing the maximum of this scale at a higher figure than any

other scale in the Colonial Service, i.e., 21675
